By this time, Hamid had collected all of Mansur’s confiscated writings and was able to begin wrapping up the trial, with a guilty verdict virtually assured. A Hallajian letter was produced which began, “From the Compassionate, the Merciful to so-and-so . . .” They claimed that in writing it, Hallaj was claiming divine omnipotence. Hallaj agreed that he had written the letter, but denied that he was claiming personal divinity or omnipotence for himself, saying: “No! This is what we call, among ourselves, essential union! (Persian: ayn-i jam) Of this mystical state we say: who is it but Allah who writes, since I and my hand are but His instruments?”
